When I began imagining the different houses and kingdoms within The Flame Beneath, I knew one needed to embody dreams, memory and the softer, more tranquil side of Azeria. That house became Lethyra.

When I think of Lethyra, I picture soft pastels, drifting clouds, quiet music and peaceful spaces. The house is represented through lilac and rose gold, giving it a gentle, dreamlike feel that reflects the magic and history woven through its kingdom.

Lethyra is also home to Azeria’s record keepers, entrusted with preserving memories, histories and the stories that might otherwise be lost. At Vael Noctis, it is perhaps one of the softer houses in appearance, but there is far more beneath that calm surface.

It is also the house of our main female character, Briar, which makes it an especially important part of The Flame Beneath.

And personally? I think Lethyra might just be my favourite house.

There is still so much more of Lethyra to explore, and I cannot wait to share more of its kingdom, history and magic as the series continues.

Caldrath Mood Board

Caldrath

Caldrath is a house built on strength, structure and protection.

Known as one of the most powerful houses in Azeria, Caldrath has long been responsible for helping shape and protect the kingdoms around it. Its people are known for building roads, structures and strongholds, creating the foundations that keep Azeria connected and secure.

At Vael Noctis, Caldrath is represented through deep oxblood reds and silver—rich, commanding colours that reflect the power and intensity of the house.

Caldrath is also home to our main male character, Malachi, which makes it one of the houses we spend a little more time getting to know throughout The Flame Beneath.

To me, Caldrath has always felt solid and imposing. It is a house of responsibility, resilience and strength, but there is also a lot more beneath that powerful exterior than first appears.

I cannot wait to share more of Caldrath, its kingdom and its role within Azeria as the series continues.

Verath Mood Board

Verath

Verath is the house of water and storms, shaped by the coastlines, rivers and waterways that flow throughout Azeria.

The kingdom of Verath plays an important role in protecting and maintaining Azeria’s coastal regions and waterways. Among its more powerful families, magic extends beyond simply controlling water—they can harness the energy within storms, redirecting or disrupting them when necessary to help limit the damage they leave behind.

At Vael Noctis, Verath is represented through deep blues and cool coastal tones, reflecting both the calm and unpredictable nature of the water its people are connected to.

Verath also holds a special place within The Flame Beneath. It is the kingdom where Briar grew up and is home to her cousin, Asher, giving her a connection to Verath that stretches far beyond the academy.

We only glimpse a small part of Verath in Book One, but we will be spending much more time there in Book Two—and I am so excited to finally explore more of the kingdom, its people and everything hiding beneath those stormy waters.
